Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S model 070 22, pulley bolt, thick grass

Question
QUESTION: I bought this mower in 2005.  While mowing thick grass, I noticed the machine stopped.  I removed the grass from under the machine and then tried to crank it up again-and then I saw white smoke come out of the spark arrester screen located on the side.. The oil was very low so I put oil in the oil drain and after getting it started I noticed sparks coming out.  What happened? Can this mower be repaired?

ANSWER: Where are the sparks coming from?  Is something rubbing on the pulleys or belt guides?
Let me know.

QUESTION: Thanks for your prompt reply- After getting the engine started, I see the sparks, as I look down on the mower coming from the engine area- the round/circular area that's open. Perhaps something is rubbing?  I bought the mower in  late 8/2005 so it is under limited warranty- but I'm wondering if the mower can be repaired.  I'm looking forward to hearing what you think.  Thanks,
Judy

Answer
The area you are refering to is the engine stack pulley.  Check the pulley bolt to ensure it is tight.

Look for any wear marks, fresh shiney metal indicating something is rubbing.  There are usually belt guides in this area.  One of the belt guides may be contacting the stack pulley.
Let me know what you find.
