Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Huskee Wont Stop Moving, brake disc, minor adjustments

Question
QUESTION: Huskee model #13AU609H131 46" deck 20HP B&S. Has the brake pedal above the gas pedal on the right side. When I step on the brake the mower won't stop, it just keeps creeping along. If I can get it to quit moving I can't get it out of gear without shutting off the engine since it seems to still think I am moving. Example: if I need to back up, I have to shut it off to change gears. The first fix was to change both belts. The long one was about to break and the short one had been replaced by the previous owner with one that was too short, but that didn't seem to be the problem since the problem didn't change. The second fix was to adjust the brake pedal. That didn't work either. Do you have any ideas?

ANSWER: Hello Sandy:

By Adjustment; Do you Mean the Rod or the Brake Pad Adjustment? You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Mower at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model Numbers. Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View. Select the Single Speed Transmission File. You May have to Magnify the Breakdown a Couple of Times in Order to Really See the Parts. The Brake Disc and Pads Should be the Adjustment you Make. If Not, then Re-adjust the Brake Rod to Its Original Position. Then Tighten The Pad Adjusting Nut Until Snug. This is the Nut in the Center of the Brake Assembly. The Outer 2 Bolts are the Mounting Bolts. Then Loosen 1/8 Turn. Operate the Mower and Make Minor Adjustments if Required. The Pads May Require Replacing. The Pads Out of Adjustment will Also Cause the Shifting Problem you Described. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

QUESTION: The fix above about tightening the pad adjustment nut allows the brake to work and you were right we tightened the rod the first time. That has been rest. The shifting problem has gotten worse though. When the engine is running in FWD I have to shut it off to put it in REV, that was happening before, but now it will not free roll in Neutral at all with the engine running or not.

Answer
Hello Again Sandy:

Go to the Site Addy I Sent you Earlier. Select the Drive System File. Remove the Belts from the Variable Speed Pulley and Make Sure the Center Sheave Slides Freely. If Not, then Spray with PB Rust catalyst and Free Up the Sheave. Are you Sure you have the Proper Belts? Since the Mower is Not Rolling in Neutral, Loosen the Brake Adjustment Until it Will Roll. Check the Double Idler Bracket and Ensure it is Moving Freely Also. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.
