Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): craftsman backpack blower wont recoil, stihl 044, manual pdf

I have a craftsman backpack blower model 794991 30cc. pull string broke and went into engine.I removed cover retrieved it and tied it back to handle ,wound it and replaced it. It will pull 3 or 4 time then quits, and I have to do it all over again. How do I keep tension on the spring as I replace the assembly?

This site, page 41 and 42, explains how to repair the starter string on a Stihl 044.  The method is the same on your blower.

The spring or pulley may have a crack or other defect causing the spring to slip after 3-4 pulls.  
I have found it quite diffcult to explain how to repair the string.  Let me know if the link helps so I can add it to favorites.
