Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs & Stratton motor, briggs stratton, crank shaft

Question
I am reassembling a Briggs & Stratton model 253707 type 0169-01 code 85112211 motor. The piston has a notch on it. Should the notch face the flywheel or the sump? Also, how do I match up the inlet and outlet valves to the crank shaft cogs?

Answer
Hello Peter:

The Notch Usually Points towards the Cam or Towards the Flywheel. The Timing Mark/Dot on the Crankshaft Matches the Timing Mark/Dot on the Cam. This Automatically Sets the Valve Timing. The Flywheel Key Sets the Plug Timing. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
