Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Black smoke (fuel would burn), lawn mover, oil sump

Question
Hi John,
We bought second hand lawn mover Mastercraft 5.25 HP.It was working fine until I added oil. Mover didn't have manual oil was low and I didn't know what type to buy in the store I found 2 types 2 cycles and 4.I was not sure but bought for 4 cycles one (sticker on lawn says only SAE30)
Now black barned oil comes from muffler and engine works very bad choking .If its a right oil choice what can be a problem?
Also if oil needs to be changed how match oil does it need (indication stick is broken)
Thanks

Lior

Answer
Hello Lior:

It Sounds like the Crankcase is Over Filled. SAE 30 is a 4 Cycle Oil and is Usually the Oil Required for Any Engine with an Oil Sump. Depending on the Model Engine, it Requires Between 20oz to 24oz of Oil to Be Full. Send me the Model Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. I Suggest you Replace the Oil Dip Stick if it is Broken. You will have an Easier Time Filling the Crankcase Properly with it. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
