Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Honda GX390 13.0hp engine, crankcase breather, piston ring

Question
Hi Ben,
This engine has been stood for about three years in my garage. has my other generator was stolen I decided to use this one, I changed the oil put fresh fuel in it. It started up on the first pull and seemed to run fine. I took it to the work site, started it up then after about five minuets oil started to come out from where the exhaust is fitted to the manifold, quite a lot of oil. I have removed the manifold it was full of oil and stunk of petrol.I am not sure was has caused this to happen or even where to locate the fault, could it be rings, carb,or valves or whatever. can you suggest anything I might try to sort out the fault?.

Regards

Here is some possible causes of your problem.

Problem: Crankcase breather passing oil.
Possible causes:

Too much oil in crankcase.
Engine speed is excessive.
Oil fill cap or gasket is damaged or missing.
Breather mechanism is dirty or defective.
Piston ring gaps are aligned.
Piston rings are worn
Head gaskets dry and cracked from sitting I would check this first
