Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 1979 Lawn Boy 21 cut, elec start, self propelled, carburetor body, adjustment screws

Question
I have my father's Lawn Boy which has a dead battery in the little green plug-on box that mounts on the rear of the truck.

Its been sitting for many years and I've attempted to get it fired up.

I have clean out the fuel tank, fuel line, the "plastic carb", internal fuel filter etc..

After putting in New fule of the correct mixture, I tried to fire it up.  - No luck..

After removing the air filter, I've pour a little fuel in to the carb and was able to run for about 10 second until it would sputter and stop. The primer pump doesn't seem to squirt any fuel in to the carb throat.  As long as I manual squirt fuel in to the carb (w/o the filter) it runs..

So the problem is "No Squirt = No Run"

Any suggestions ?? The lawn is getting longer by the hour :-(

THanks  Cam

Answer
Hello Cam:

Remove, Disassemble and Soak the Carburetor Overnight in Carburetor Cleaner (I Use Gunk). I have Found that Most People can Use a Breakdown/IPL and Disassemble the Carburetor Enough for Proper Cleaning. You Only have to Remove the Bowl, Float Pin, Float and Needle Valve and Any Adjustment Screws that Go Into the Carburetor Body. The Welch Plugs Do Not have to be Removed. Then Soak the Carburetor Body and Parts in a 1 Gallon Can of Gunk Carburetor Cleaner Overnight. The Can has a Parts Tray Inside it for the Small Parts. Once the Carburetor and Parts are in the Cleaner, you can Replace the Lid for Safety and to Prevent Accidental Spillage. Then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air. Install New Parts if Required. The Only Other Option is to Replace the Carburetor. I Hate the Plastic Carburetors. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower at this Site Addy, https://lookup3.toro.com/partdex/default.cfm?xCaller=LawnBoy and Select Start Parts Viewer. Then Enter the Model Numbers and Click Search. Then Select View Assembly Drawings. Then Select the Component you Wish to View. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
