Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere 14PZ, fuel tank cap, water in the fuel

Question
After 13 years of faithful service my mower won't turn over.  I changed the spark plug which was pretty gunked and it actually started although it was difficult.  Next time I went to start it, I couldn't get it to go.  Any ideas?

The following information may help you out with your mower problems The reason most engines wont start is if the Fuel tank is empty or shutoff valve is closed, or fuel line or fuel tank cap vent is clogged.
There is water in the fuel.
Carburetor is overchoked.
Carburetor is improperly adjusted or needs service.
Ignition system or its wiring is defective or ignition switch is off.
Deadman or other cutoff switch is open or defective.
Spark plug is fouled, improperly gapped, or damaged.
Engine compression is poor You said the spark plug was gunked up that is a ring problem and lack of maintenance
Your mower may need a good tune-up
