Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Tecumseh 5 HP Dies, craftsman eager 1, carburetor body

Question
QUESTION: I have a 5 HP Craftsman Eager 1 (model 143 945004 40390) lawnmower that starts but will not stay running.  I have replaced the valve and seat and adjusted the float to 11/64" (which I think is the correct setting).  Please give me some advice where to go from here.  Thanks.

ANSWER: Hello George:

If the Carburetor was Not Soaked in Carburetor Cleaner, then the Internal Gas Ports are Most Likely Still Restricted.  Remove, Disassemble and Soak the Carburetor Overnight in Carburetor Cleaner (I Use Gunk). I have Found that Most People can Use a Breakdown/IPL and Disassemble the Carburetor Enough for Proper Cleaning. You Only have to Remove the Bowl, Float Pin, Float and Needle Valve and Any Adjustment Screws that Go Into the Carburetor Body. The Welch Plugs Do Not have to be Removed. Then Soak the Carburetor Body and Parts in a 1 Gallon Can of Gunk Carburetor Cleaner Overnight. The Can has a Parts Tray Inside it for the Small Parts. Once the Carburetor and Parts are in the Cleaner, you can Replace the Lid for Safety and to Prevent Accidental Spillage. Then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air. Install New Parts if Required. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

QUESTION: The mower still starts and then dies.  I have made sure the holes in the bowl nut/bolt are open.  The carb is leaking gas which sounds like a needle and seat or float problem.  Should I replace the needle and seat again?  What is the float setting??  Any assistance would be appreciated.

Answer
Hello Again George:

The Needle Valve in the Carburetor is Not Seating Properly. The Float is Set to Level to the Bowl Mating Surface when Looking at the Carburetor with the Carburetor Upside Down. There are 2 Types of Needle Valves. 1 is a Needle Valve and a Set. The Needle is Solid Metal with a Flay O-Ring Seat that is Inserted Into the Carburetor Port Before the Needle is Inserted. The Other is a Needle with a Black Rubber Tip. This Needle is Designed to be Used Without the Flat O-Ring Seat. Either Type will Work. You Must Make Sure there is No Flat O-Ring in the Needle Valve Port when Using the 1 Piece Needle Valve. Since this is a Tecumseh Engine, I have a PDF Site Addy that May Assist you Also. http://www.tecumsehpower.com/CustomerService/BSI.pdf  Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance.
