Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): MDT 5hp chipper shredder - fuel tank, carburetor body, chipper shredder

Question
I bought a 5hp MDT chipper shredder about 4 years ago.  I had never owned one before.  It sat for about 2 years in my shed.  I recently rolled it out and tried to check the gas and the fuel cap was gummed up.  It finally came off and the foam filter inside the tank appears to have started to break up in the gas.  Yeah, the gas was old.  Anyway, I would like to take the fuel tank off and clean it or replace it.  Can I do that, or am I screwed?  I have not tried to start it.

Answer
Hello Geoff:

Remove the Gas Tank. Remove the Foam from the Tank. Take a Handfull of BBs and Dump them in the Tank and Replace the Cap. Shake Vigorously in All Directions. The More you Shake the Tank, the Better it will Come Clean. When Finished Shaking, Dump the BBs and Trash Out of the Tank. Carefully Spray the Tank Out with Compressed Air. I Suggest you Also,  Remove, Disassemble and Soak the Carburetor Overnight in Carburetor Cleaner (I Use Gunk). I have Found that Most People can Use a Breakdown/IPL and Disassemble the Carburetor Enough for Proper Cleaning. You Only have to Remove the Bowl, Float Pin, Float and Needle Valve and Any Adjustment Screws that Go Into the Carburetor Body. The Welch Plugs Do Not have to be Removed. Then Soak the Carburetor Body and Parts in a 1 Gallon Can of Gunk Carburetor Cleaner Overnight. The Can has a Parts Tray Inside it for the Small Parts. Once the Carburetor and Parts are in the Cleaner, you can Replace the Lid for Safety and to Prevent Accidental Spillage. Then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air. Install New Parts if Required. Send me the Model Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
