Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere L100 w/Briggs & Stratton Engine at Constant High Throttle, john deere l100, briggs stratton engine

Question
John,

I came across several other posts that seemed to be similar to the issue I'm having, but I thought I would check with you just to make sure.  I bought a used John Deere L100 last week (appx. 4 yrs old) and replaced the hoses, belts, battery, spark plug, changed oil, etc (normal maintenance stuff).  When changing the blades yesterday, I decided to tip the mower up vertically towards the back to further inspect the mowing deck.  This must have been a bad thing because after doing this I think some fuel "leaked" past the crankcase and got mixed in with the oil.  The mower wouldn’t start after this, as it would only spew gas up through the air intake for the carb and also spit out oil/gas mixed from the muffler.

After letting it sit overnight and changing the oil again, it cranked up very strong this morning and I was able to cut the grass today (at high throttle only).  The problem is that my throttle no longer seems to work, as the mower is at constant high throttle regardless of what I do with the throttle control.  The throttle previously worked, so I’m not sure what I’ve don’t to make this happen.  Any idea what this could be?  Is this a governor problem?  Your advice is greatly appreciated!!

Thanks in advance,

John

Answer
Hello John:

Check the Throttle Linkage at the Throttle Control Bracket on the Engine. Is the Cable Moving the Throttle Control. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers and Click Find. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. Then Select the Fuel and Air File. Then Select the Governor Linkage File. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
