Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): McCulloch 2816 Gas Weed Wacker, weed wacker, pulley

Question
Hi, I took apart the machine because the pull rope broke. When I took off that part to fix the piece behind it came off and I cannot "wind" the long metal band back into place. Are you familiar with what I'm asking and is there an easy fix?? Thanks for your time.

Answer
Start by hooking the spring into the slot on the outside edge of the pulley houning.  Feed/wind the spring from the outside to the inside.  This should be fairly easy.

With the spring inside the housing there should be no tension on it.

Is there a hole on the outer edge of the starter pulley?  If so, remove the starter handle and wind the rope on the pulley.  You have need to tie a knot on one end of the rope to hold it on/into the pulley.  Wind all but about 6 inches of string on the pulley.  Place the last 6 inches of the string on the outer pulley hole so you can grab it with your hand.  Install pulley in starter housing.  You should notice a notch on the inside of the starter pulley.  It is supposed engage the spring.  Install the pulley ensureing it engages/catches the pulley.  Use the last 6 inches of the string you left hanging out the side of the pulley and wind the pulley 2-3 times.  You should feel tension.  If not you are winding the wrong direction.

Hang on to the rope and feed it through the housing and then install the handle.  You may have to wind the pulley a couple of more times to get it to pull all the rope back in.

This is easier to do than to explain so let me know if this helps.
