Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): JD L120 PTO problem, straight forward approach, prong plug

Question
Like your straight forward approach.  Had the white wire come loose at the PTO clutch connection.  reconnected, PTO engaged and ran fine for 5 minutes. Pushed button down to turn off, did not go off.  Pulled up, pushed down, shut off.  Would not restart.  Checked wire, still connected.  Subsequently checked with 12v tester, no power to PTO clutch connector.  Tried checking PTO switch, has 6 contacts on the connector, 8 on switch. Got strong voltage from the bottom right contact and was able to jump that with the ground or neutral top left.  The center 2 contacts gave a low glow on the 12v light tester when jumpered, but no power to the PTO.  Checked the PTO ground (back right engine bolt from a previous post), secure.  Checked seat safety switch, shuts off mower when I get up and switch is engaged.  I'm guessing the 2 center contacts are the seat contacts.
I've ordered a PTO switch from JD.  The mower's under 2 yrs, but I hate having the dealer work on it, they have had it for nearly 9 weeks already this season with carb and head gasket issues.  I did call them for advice, they told me to check the second fuse under the hood, I'm pretty sure there's only the one 20A that's on the wiring diagram,.....
Any additional help or advice is appreciated, thanks for all the other answers, have helped a great deal.
Next mower I buy from the dealer and not a big box, hope the treatment is better.

Answer
You have a 2 prong plug going to the pto.  One side has 1 white wire, the other side has 2 black wires.  One of the black wires is not properly crimped into the connector.

Here is a copy of the Deere bulliten on this problem.

Problem or Situation:

·        PTO Connector not installed on PTO Clutch

·        Black 110 or 520 wires may be broken inside the wire insulation causing an open PTO ground circuit.

Solution:

1.    Check PTO Connector is installed on PTO Clutch and check ground circuit for open.

2.    Remove PTO Connector.

3.    Remove black wire female connector from PTO connector.

4.    Check black ground wires, at female connector crimp, for broken “wire” inside insulation.

5.    Repair black wires, or replace rear wire harness.

The sad thing Doug is you could have bought this mower at a dealer for the exact same price.

You now have 2 options:
1, fix the connector yourself and get it over with.

2, remove the rear harness and take it to the dealer.

Tell him about DTAC solution 60723.  Tell him you want a new harness and will do the labor yourself.  The dealer will jump all over this and give you a new harness.  He will then claim the harness AND the labor on a warranty claim.
