Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Engine Starts then Stops on B&S 917.376661, new spark, electrical problems

I have a brand new mower that starts and stops within a few seconds.  This happened on just the second use.  I have read recent posts that had a similar problem and the answer usually is to clean the carburetor but I was wondering if there may be an electrical issue with my mower.  Thanks for any help you can provide.

It is rare to have electrical problems since there is only an ignition coil.  It is possible the shut-off cable or switch on the engine is defective.  If so, this would probably be covered under warranty.

You might want to try a new spark plug, keep you old just in case.  I would suspect you problem is more carburetor related.

How old is your fuel?
