Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Ticking sound, craftsman model, hydraulic lifters

Question
I have a Craftsman model #917.272066 with a Kohler 16hp engine, model CV460-59809 engine. It's had a slight ticking sound when started, but now the sound does not stop. Is there some kind of valve adjustment that can be made to alleviate the ticking or what would you suggest?

Answer
Hello Carol:

I was Unable to Locate the Engine Model you Sent me. However, According to the Mower Model Numbers the Engine Should be a CV460S-26509. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model Numbers CV460S-26509. Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. This Engine has Hydraulic Lifters and Require No Setting. However, Remove the Valve Cover and Make Sure the Rocker Arms are Tight. If the Rocker Arms Loosen, the Engine will have the Ticking Sound you Described. Without Being Able to Actually Hear the Ticking, I Can Not be Sure the Ticking is the Valves. The Coil Slightly Touching the Flywheel will Cause a Ticking Noise Also. The OEM Says to Set the Coil at .010in, but I Set the Coils at .020in to Prevent this from Occurring. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
