Question
I have a 20 hp yard machine by mtd the model number off the briggs and stratton engine is 461707 type 0143 e1 it also says twin 2. My engine keeps dying when i go to engage the blades.Engine runs strong when in motion without the blades engaged. Sometimes black smoke will come out. I have looked at the spark plugs and the oil they seem to be in good order. Im not certain what might be wrong I have replaced the piston before.

Sounds like when you start to put a load on the mower it boggs. You need to Test the engine under load. It should respond to load pickup immediately. An engine that dies is set too lean. An engine that runs roughly when picking up load is set too rich. Make a small adjustment (i.e., 1/8th turn) and test again.
