Saab: car noise, car noise, nuetral

Question
Have a 99 SAAB 9-3 convert.I was running errands and when I returned to start my car it made a loud screeching noise in nuetral. I turned car off and then tried again. Also the windows would not roll up???? Had my 90 old aunt in car so started again.. no noise in park or reverse or drive. Drove home about 5 miles and when I parked the car and restarted screeching noise returned in "park" as well as " nuetral"  but not each time I started it.Car has 120 k . Could it be timing chain or belt?

Answer
"Screeching" is typically caused by a loose belt or locked pulley; less frequently a timing component. As noted in my profile, my hands on experience is limited to the OLDER 900s than yours, so I don't know if you have a timing belt or chain.
HOWEVER, I cannot think of any logical connection between gear shift position and "screeching"; only an on-the-spot observation and diagnosis could do that.
