Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere STX 38, john deere stx 38, model numbers

Hello,
I just received a STX 38. I just had it service. I changed the sparkle plug, fuel filter, oil, and air filter. I tried it out and it mowed fine for about 5 minutes and then quit. I didn't know what was wrong so I sat their for about 3-5 minutes and tried it again. It started and  worked for a few minutes and quit again. This repeated until I finally gave up and put it away. Any thoughts? It has the 12.5 Kohler motor. I'm not sure of the year, but I'm guessing it is 20 years old?

If this Engine is 20 Years Old, then it May have Point Set and Not Solid State Ignition. Send me the Model Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. The Numbers Should be Stamped Into the Blower Housing (metal engine cover) Above the Spark Plug. Usually this is an Indicaton of a Bad Coil/Ign Module or in your Case it May mean a Bad Point Set. The Engine Model Numbers will Determine this. Thanks.
