Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): kohler engine question, safety switches, power stroke

Question
i have a kohler 14 hp cv14t engine on a scag 52 inch mower.serial # is 2419906954 spec no 1461.it is a pull start and has been running fine until recently.now it does not seem to fire.tried plug wire against frame while pull starting.i took it to a shop and mechanic replaced air filter and plug for $ 45.00 and said that was the problem.the old plug had been cleaned as well as the filter.it cranked at his shop but upon getting home and sitting a few days wont do a thing when pulled.i have checked all the safety swithes and actually by passed them with a jumper to no avail.i guess i need a engine manual because there is a part on housing with wires going into it and i guess its electrical or so i am told there is a power pack thats bad.......same mechanic said that may be the problem..........help......fuel thru filter and all other simple things i have checked .thanks for any guidance and is there a place to download a kohler manual.

Answer
Hello Tom:

Lets Start at the Beginning. You Have All the Safety Switches Jumper or Disconnected (whichever applies) in  the Harness. You have Wired the Plug to the Engine and it Is Not Firing. You Now Need to Remove the Blower Housing (Metal Engine Cover) and Disconnect the Coil/Ign Module Shut Off Wire. Check for Spark. If No Spark, then the Coil is Bad. If Spark, One of the Bypasses is Not Getting a Good Connection or there is a Bad Wire in the Harness that is Grounding the Coil. The Coil has No Current Going to it. One Side is Grounded to the Engine The Other is Attached to the Coil Shut Off Switch. The Cut Switch Ground the Opposite Side of the Coil to Stop the Coil from Firing the Plug. The Magnetic Field from the Magnets on the Flywheel Make the Current for the Coil and the Flywheel Key Times the Coil Firing with the Piston Location During the Power Stroke. The Part on the Housing with All the Wires to it is the Voltage Regulator. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
