Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere SX 38 Tractor, hydrostatic transmission, transmission brake

Question
engineis totally dead.  put in new battery. seems like wheels are locked or engine is in gear. so absolutely nothing happens.  What's the problem??  Any thoughts?? Thanks

Answer
The engine isn't dead but the crank circuit is.  The power to crank goes from the key to the pto switch to the transmission/brake switch, back to the key  and then to the solenoid.  All of these wires will be purple.  Get out your test light and follow the purples until the power stops.  This stopping point will be your bad component.

The wheels are locked because you have a hydrostatic transmission.  This is normal.  Under the left axle is a lever you can flip to release the pump so you can roll the machine.
