Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S Lawn Mower, safety cable, grand daughters

Question
QUESTION: I bought a Ryobi lawn mower with a 6-1/2 HP B&S motor last summer.  It ran great until I tried to start it this spring.  It has no spark.  When I took it apart the coil was loose and rubbing on the flywheel.  I replaced the plug and the coil. No luck.  Could the coil being in contact with the flywheel affect the magnet?  It seems strong.  Is there any other components to the ignition on this motor other than the magnet and the coil?  Also, the flywheel key and crank are fine.

Congratulations on the grandchild I have two grand daughters.  Ain't life grand!

ANSWER: When you say you replaced the coil do you mean you installed a new coil?  If you did and you still don't have spark you  have a bad safety cable.  Coils are like a cat. They don't care what you touch as long as you don't touch them.  You didn't damage the coil, you just pissed it off.  Get it off of the magnet and it will be fine.

FYI... flywheel, coil,  that's it.  Except for the cable.

QUESTION: Thanks for resonding.  I installed a new coil gapped .010" from the flywheel and a new plug - nada. How about the magnet in the flywheel?  Could the coil rubbing on the flywheel have affected the strength of the magnet - maybe it got hot?  Where's the safety cable go?

Thanks.

Answer
Got a screwdriver at home.  See if it sticks to the magnet.  I know it seems simple, but, it's either a magnet or it isn't. FYI.. It will still be a magnet.

The cable goes from the bail you hold down at the top to the engine kill mechanism. It will be on the side of the engine oppisite the carb.
