Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): jd 68 no spark, emery cloth, magnatism

Question
QUESTION: I recently purchased a jd 68 rider on which the last owner (cheap) welded a broken axle rather than replace it. The rider has not run since. I replace the points, cond, plug, mag pick up coil, still no spark. There is magnatism on the flywheel, and the spacing is set at 0.10.

ANSWER: Hello Al:

Have you Checked for Spark with the Shut Off Wire Disconnected from the Coil? The Points and Condensor Gap is .020in and the Coil Gap is the Set the Same. The Problem May be Caused by a Bad Safety Switch. Did you Clean the Points Set Contacts with a Lint Free Rag before you Installed them? There is a Coating on the Point Set to Prevent Corrosion. Sometimes this Coating will Interfer with the Contact and you Get Not Spark. Use 440 Emery Cloth to Lightly Rough Up the Contact Surface. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

QUESTION: John, I cleaned and roughed up the contacts, disconnected the kill wire (no spark) along with the wire to the same stud from the switch and still it does not run. The mower was running when the axel broke, and has not run since the welding was done. New coil installed with .020 gap.
ANSWER: Hello Again Al:

When you Set the Point Set Gap was the Plunger Extended or Retracted in the Housing. You have to have the Point Set Plunger Extended when Setting the Point Set. If the Point Set is Gapped Correctly, Cleaned the Contacts and Still No Fire, then you Most Likely Purchased a Bad Point Set. I have Seen a Many a Point Set with a Bad Condensor when New. I Suggest you Replace the Point Set with the Rotary #8786 Electronic Ignition Module. They are Easy to Install and Cost Effective. Never Worry about the Point Set Again. Most of the Small Engine Service Centers can Order it for You. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

QUESTION: John; I have purchased the briggs magnetron kit to replace the points, but it came without instructions. Any ideas?

Thanks
Al
ANSWER: Hello Again Al:

Is this the Plastic Unit that Clips to the Coil and has a Wire that Attaches to the Coil and the Cut Off Wire? Is it the Square Box Like Unit with 2 Wires; One for Ground and the Other to the Coil Shutoff Wire ( this one is Similar to the Nova)? Send me the Part Number So I can Look Up the Proper Picture of the Type Magnetron Kit you Have. Thanks.

QUESTION: John; It is the Briggs no 5025 that must clip to the coil.

Thanks Al

Answer
Hello Again Al:

Remove the Coil From the Engine. With the Coil Pickups Facing you, the Magnetron Clips Between the Center Pickup and the Left Side Pickup. The Ground Wire Connects to the Ground with the Coil Ground and the Other Connects to the Cit Off Wire with the Coil Cut Off Wire. It has Been a Long While Since I have Seen this Style Module. It is a Good Replacement for the Point Set Too. I had Forgotten that Briggs had them Still on the Market. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.
