Saab: 92 saab 900s, heartbreaker, aww

Question
I have a 92 Saab 900s 5-spd....when I put the car into reverse it will move for about 5 sec and then pop out of gear. Could the reverse gear have some teeth broken and if so can I have this repaired..gears 1-5 are great.

Answer

Aww...what you have is a "heartbreaker". The reverse gear is worn indeed, and will need replacement. The problem is not the gear, but the labor to replace it. It is the VERY LAST item to be removed when one disassembles the transmission. Unfortunately, this requires the engine and transmission to be removed as an assembly and then the transmission COMPLETELY taken apart.
My guess would be 20-25 hrs labor in a shop. I have done it in 10-15 hours "in my day", not not for quite awhile. A less expensive solution would be to try and find a used transmission, if possible. A good website to locate one is <www.partshotlines.com>.
