Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Carborator or throttle linkage adjustment on Briggs & Straton 12V802 (YardManII Mower), briggs straton, briggs and stratton

Question
QUESTION: Hi John.  I am trying to bring back to life a Yardman II  5HP lawn mower with a Briggs and Stratton engine. Model 12V802, Type 2376-A1, 9702 1858 Code.
It had been setting outside for a couple years, he linkage was rusted tight. I lubed it up. removed the carburetor and soaked it in carb cleaner overnight (dip basket) put it back together and it fired up.  The engine ran slow but it ran.  I ordered a gasket kit (there was one missing between the carb and the engine) put it all back together and now the darn thing starts hard, runs for a few min then stops.  I can speed up the engine by holding the throttle open at the carb, but i cannot find any adjustments on the linkage or on the carburetor.  I must have done something wrong.  I pulled down a parts list from outdoor distributors website but cannot tell from the diagram if the linkage is together correctly.  Any ideas?
Thanks for your help.

ANSWER: Hello Rick:

Have you Changed the Gas Filter. Try the Breakdown/IPL at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model Numbers. Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. Magnify the Breakdown for Better Viewing. Select the Air Cleaner, Controls, Exhaust System and Governor Spring Folder. If the Throttle Control Cable is Working Properly, then Check the Contorl Spring (# 209B). When the Throttle Cable is Moved from Idle to Full Throttle, the Cable Moves the Control Linkage and the Linkage Moves the Spring which Pulls the Governor Arm. The Govrnor Arm Pushes or Pulls the Carburetor Throttle Control Valve Open and Closed Using the Linkage (# 202). The Spring Working with the Governor Control Arm Sets the Engine Speed. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck

QUESTION: Hi john, i took the carborator apart again and soaked it in carb cleaner just to make sure there was nothing i missed.
It still seems to run at idle regardless of where i set the speed control.  could the spring be stretched out and need replacement?  if i put a bit more tension on the spring, the throttle will open and pick up speed.  I also took a couple of pics of the linkage if its possible to send them to you for your opinion and validation that ive got it set up correctly.  Thanks Rick.

Answer
Hello Again Rick:

You can Send Photos to this Addy, jbridger54@yahoo.com. I Use this Addy to Receive Photos Until this Site Gets there System Up and Running to Receive Such Information. Yes the Spring can Get Stretched. The Ear that the Spring Attaches to on the Throttle Control Bracket can be Bent to Make the Spring Tighter. If you Bend this Ear, Be Carefull and Don't Set the Spring Too Tight. If the Engine Sounds Like it is Revving too High, then Bend the Ear Back a Little Until the Revs Sound Correct. Hope this Helps.
