Answer
Hello Dave:

There are 2 Possible Causes here. 1- Reset the Valve Clearance. There is a Problem with the Valve Clearance on All the OEM OHV Engines. The Adjustments are Moving or the Valves are Stretching. Anyway, Rest the Valve Clearance to the Following: Intake .004in - .006in and Exhaust .008in - .010in. 2- If the Starter Doesn't Turn the Engine Properly with a Fully Charged Battery After the Valves are Adjusted, then Check the Starter. NEVER JUMP a Lawnmower from a Vehicle with the Engine Running, Engine Off Only, Please. The Alternator on the Auto Shoves (in a word) the Voltage Back Into the Lawnmower Stator when the Engine Starts and Shorts the Diode/Regulator. The Stator Can't Compete with the Larger Alternator. you have 9 to 15 Amps Out the Stator. You have Up to 68 Amps Out the Alternator. Check the Stator/Regulator by Running the Engine at Full Throttle. Use a Voltmeter to Check the Voltage at the Battery. It Should be 12.6VDC or Higher. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model Numbers. Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
