Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): no spark, john deere rx75, regulator rectifier

Question
I have a john deere rx75, and can get no spark, i replaced a 60 dollar igniter? and another small electric part next to it, did the wires that come out of the stater plug into the electric part with one prong or does it go to the black plastic piece with two prongs, why cant i get spark.  test light in the stater wire shows dim light on tester.

Answer
Once upon a time in a galaxy far away a man learned a lesson the hard way. I just had to throw that in, in honor of the 30th anniversary of the release of the original Star Wars movie.

The wires from the stator go to the black plastic thing (regulator/rectifier) a single wire plugs into the ignitor, it will be white.

Are you positive the problem is an engine problem and not a mower problem?  Disconnect the white wire on the engine from the tractor's wiring harness. If you have no spark you know you guessed wrong and you need a coil. Coil or ignitor 80/20 chance. I would guess ignitor every time. If it does have spark replace the safety relay under the seat.

There is an important lesson to be learned here.  With most electrical problems your best troubleshooting tool is your dealer. He would have charged you 1/2 labor 30.00 and would have got it right the first time. Instead you GUESSED ignitor and it was a wasted 60.00. So the moral of this story is trust your dealer. As a service manager at a Deere dealer I often feel offended that people think we are there to take advantage of them and we pad our bills to make a profit.  The truth is that a tech who climbs the ladder and works at a Deere dealer is the "best of the best" in the power equipment field there are 2 types of mechanics. Those who work for a Deere dealer and those that aren't good enough.

FYI... the stator has nothing to do with ignition. All it does is charge the battery so you can have an electric starter instead of a pull starter.
