Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere STX38, john deere stx38, american idol final result

Question
QUESTION: Hi,
I have a JD STX38 I recently purchased used.  I have cut the grass twice, and the deck belt broke twice.  I looked up the belt number (1/2" x 96") and that's correct.  It seems very sloppy and the tensioner does not have much tension on it.  The rods on the front of the deck are also loose, and it just seems to be too close to the front tires.  When I look underneath at the belt when the mower is engaged it seems to be violently shaking around.  What are the main causes for breaking belts?  What else could I look for that could be wrong?

ANSWER: Sorry for the delay in response.

I can't answer this question without knowing whether you have a black deck or a yellow deck.

As an STX owner you always need to say,  I have an STX with a black deck, or, I have an STX with a yellow deck.

These 2 mowers are so different I can't believe they are both called STX.

Now "the Truthmeister" part.

If you have broken 2 belts it doesn't matter what color your deck is. You are either installing it wrong or you have a bad idler. You can't buy a 1/2x96 belt. It won't work and was more expensive than an original belt from Deere. The ACTUAL SPEC IS 5/8"X96.71". If you can find this size belt somewhere besides Deere buy it. FYI...You can't.

QUESTION: Thanks for your reply.  It is a black deck with the hydro transmission. The belt seems to be sloppy.  So you're saying it is a 5/8" wide belt, and can only be purchased from a JD dealer?

Thanks again,

Scott

Answer
That's right only at a dealer. They do that on purpose. It's not just Deere. Everybody does it. Ford, Chevrolet, Toro you name it. The good news is that the most expensive belt on this tractor is only about 20.00.

While you are at the dealer ask him for a belt diagram. That way you know you have it on right.

Now I'm going to go watch the "American Idol" final result show.  It makes Mrs "Truthmeister" happy.

You can trust your dealer. He bleeds green, just like I do.
