Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S 12.5 HP Lawn Tractor Hard Starting, mtd lawn tractor, solinoid

Question
Hello Eric,

I have a 12.5 HP MTD Lawn Tractor that I am having a bit of a problem trying to figure out why it is hard to start. When trying to start it the motor will turn over maybe one turn until compression is built up then the engine will cease to roll over. If I turn it by had past that point it will roll over the same again. The only way I can get it to start is to boost it with my truck and to back the spark plug out a bit. I am wondering what the problem could be. I am stumped, is there a problem with the head or the weight that works the decompression release is hung-up or the spring is broke. I have read that it coulld be the solinoid maybe...Please Help

thanks

Jason

Answer
Doubt the solenoid is at fault.  Usually the battery is weak or there is corrosion on the terminals and cable ends.
How old is the mower?  How old is the batttery?  Is the oil level correct?  When was the last major tune-up including a valve service?
Let me know.
Eric
