Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman rider 917.255850, carburetor, gunk

Question
I've used this mower several times this season with no problem. However, it starts immediately but will only run at full choke and max throttle. When cutting engine speed may at times slow down and would kill except I play with the choke to keep it running. Although it is at max throttle it doesn't seem as fast as before. I've changed fuel filter, plugs and air cleaner. Appreciate any assistance. Thanks Jim

Answer
Hello Jim:

If Compression is Not an Issue, then Remove, Disassemble and Soak the Carburetor Overnight in Carburetor Cleaner (I use Gunk). Then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air. Install a New Kit if Required. From your Description, it Sounds like the Main Carburetor Jet is Restricted. By Using the Choke you are Making the Carburetor Run the Engine by Bypassing the Main Jet and Using the Choke Port Instead. Go to this Site Addy, http://www3.sears.com/ and Enter the Model Numbers in the Search Box at the Upper Left and Click Go. Then Visually Verify the Equipment and Click Continue. Now you can Select Either View Diagram or View Parts List. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let Me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
