Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Hard start, needle problem, kohler engines

Question
I have a Craftsman Kholer lawn tractor 18HP, 42" model no. 917.272481. First time this spring I used was ok. Then the next time I used it, it wont start anymore. Heard backfiring as well. Gas mixed in the oil, drained it and put a new oil and filter. Drained gas from fuel tank and changed fuel filter, spark plug. Sprayed carburetor with cleaner. Observed that gas level is going low everyday though the tractor is just sitting in my garage. Take battery to Sears and found it's good. Any thoughts before I call for in-home service from Sears?

Answer
Hello Cris:

This is a Common Problem. Install a Manual Cut Off Valve in the Gas Line to the Carburetor. Turn Off the Gas Flow when the Engine is Not in Use. The Carburetor Needle Isn't Seating Properly. You can Clean the Carburetor and Replace the Needle and Seat, but the Problem will Return in a Few Months. The Manual Cut Off Valve will Prevent the Gas from Filling the Crankcase. In Some Cases the Needle Problem Does Not Affect the Operation of the Engine. If this is the Case, then Operate the Engine as you Normally do. After you Drained the Crankcase, did the Engine Start? How Does the Engine Turn when Trying to Start. Does it Turn 3/4 Turn and Stop? If Yes, then the Valves Need to be Re-Set Also. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM (Kohler Engines, this is the Manufacturer of your Engine). Then Enter the Model Numbers CV492S-27506 (this is your Engine Model Numbers). Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let Me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
