Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere Sabre 1538 Hydro, john deere sabre 1538, sectional index

Question
My 1996 John Deere Sabre 1538 Hydro won't start.
The engine does not turn over.
Problem appears to be electrical in nature.
Battery 1 year old and charged up.
Battery kept inside basement during winter but low at the
end of the winter. Charged it up. (Battery meter goes to 0)
There is a click sometimes but not all times when key is turned. Not a loud click, very slight and not every time.
Took key mechanism apart, may replace key cylinder where
key turns.
How do I bypass the seat safety electrical switch to make
sure it is not the problem?

Answer
Hello Richard:

If this is a Single Wire Plug for the Seat Safety Switch, then Simply Disconnect the Switch. If a Double Wire Plug, then Disconnect the Switch and Jumper the Harness. I Do Not Suggest Operating the Mower with Any Safety Switch or Safety Device Disabled. Use this For Diagnostic Purposes Only, Please. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower and Engine at this Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers 1538. Then Select your Model from the Results Area. Then Select Sectional Index. Now Select the File you Need to View (Electrical).  Then Select Wiring Harness. Check the Blade Safety First (PTO). If the Solenoid Isn't Engaging, then the Blade Safety (PTO) or Clutch/Brake Safety Will be the Most Likely Causes. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let Me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
