Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Toro B&S Lawnmower Engine, lawnmower engine, type numbers

Question
Hi John,
My 30 yr old Toro B&S lawnmower is giving me grief.
Started the season ok, but now won't run.
Replaced carb gasket, cleaned air filter, cleaned plug, new gas. Engine starts & then stalls but runs without air filter on only if I hold the choke plate open. Throttling back causes engine to stall.
Your advice would be appreciated.

Answer
Hello Rick:

Send me the Model Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. The Model and Type Numbers are STAMPED Into the Blower Housing above the Spark Plug. You May Have a Valve Problem or a Compression Problem. Check the Engine Compression. It Should be No Lower then 80psi. The Carburetor can Still be the Cause Also. It May Require You to Remove, Disassemble and Soak the Carburetor Overnight in Carburetor Cleaner (I use Gunk). Then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air. Install a New Kit if Required. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let Me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck

Respectfully

John
