Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Is My Stator/Alternator Bad?, stator, engine model

Question
I recently purchased a used mower (Snapper Yard Cruiser Model HZ14380BVE) with a 14HP Briggs engine (Model: 287700 Type: 0122-01  Code:  970304-ZD).  The battery was dead & wouldn't take a charge so I replaced it.  The new battery also failed.  Now the third is shot.  I measured voltage from the regulator and it was only about 6-8vdc.  I replaced the regulator (because it was the easiest), but the new one also shows only 8vdc out of the regulator (with a known good batter installed).  I suspect it may have a bad stator, but don't know how to check it.  It only has one wire coming out to the regulator.  Is there an easy way to check the stator, or do I have to remove the flywheel to get at it to check?  (Based on a chart in the parts manual, the regulator on this engine matches up with a 9amp stator/alterator, part #696457).

Answer
Hello Greg:

If the Regulator Did Not Correct the Problem, then the Stator is Bad. No Need to try and Test the Stator. You are Correct about the Replacement Stator. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let Me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
