Honda: Honda Prelude 1988 STI 2.0, spark plug gap, auto transmission fluid

Question
Hello,

I was just wandering if you could attempt to answer a few questions for me.

1) I recently just bought this car from my brother and when he had it, it had a few problems. I think i know the answer to this one but when i drive the prelude for a while occasionally my S4 button flashes on and off and sometime later my check engine light will come on, I have changed the oil but i think its my Auto Transmission Fluid that i have to change.

2) I used to get about 600 - 650 kms out of a tank but now its down to 400 - 420 tops i'm not sure what it is but i think it has something to do with my fuel injectors.

If you could answer any of these questions or give any advice it would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
I did not know Honda made an STi model..hmm

I had an 88 Prelude, when the S4 blinks, it means the tranny fluid is LOW, make sure you check the level AFTER you have driven the car atleast 15kms or so on level ground.

Dunno the total miles on the car ( I ask this to be mentioned when asking a question)  but fuel efficiency is affected when:

- Air Filter is dirty
- Spark plugs/ Spark plug cables/ distributor cap has not been replaced at appropriate maintenance intervals.
- Spark plug gap is not set appropriately
- The Oxygen Sensor needs replacing - on Hondas generally around 60-80 thousand miles. This, besides not screwing the fuel cap on tight enough is the most common cause of Check Engine lights on Hondas.
A malfunctioning O2 sensor causes poor mileage because it cannot monitor the engine performance combustion wise.

- Use a fuel injector cleaner atleast 2-3 times a year depending on quality of fuel in your are. You may also want to replace the fuel filter if its been a while.

Along with all this, make sure your tire pressure is between 30-32 psi.
