Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): starter, excessive wear, flywheel

Question
Have a 12.5 B&S I/C, starter just spins when engage.Does the clutch drive needs replacing or maybe the gear, or what would cause this. Eng model # 289707 Type 0154-01

Answer
Hello Rich:

Usually the Cause for this is the Starter Gear. Check the Inside of the Starter Gear. There are Twists that will Rip Out if the Gear Binds from Excessive Wear or a Lose Starter. If these are Good, then Check the Starter Gear for a Crack. It will Open Up when it Engages the Flywheel and Not Turn the Engine. Check the Matching Twists on the Starter Drive. If these are Damaged or Worn Down you will have this Problem. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
