Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs & Stratton wont idle down, sears craftsman, briggs and stratton

Question
Hi, I have a Sears Craftsman, 21.5 hp, Intec twin cylinder, model # 917.272462. While mowing I heard a pop like sound and mower reved real high. Continued to mow, but only by reducing throttle to half speed. I use to be able to control it, but now it revs top speed at start up and can only kill the beast by choking. Throttle linkage appears intact and work freely. The lawn tractor is 4 years old and I have never had a wrench on it, so it is now as it was from factory. I have researched your site and my fears of a governor problem is suspected as being the culprit. Your thoughts about any adjustments or what I should check for would be appreciated. I could also use maybe some guidance on procedure for replacing the governor, diagrams, etc., if need be. BTW, nice informative website.

Answer
Hello Tony:

1st- Thanks for the Good Words About All Experts. We Try. Now for the Problem. 1- If the Engine will Not Throttle back when you Move the Carburetor Linkage by Hand, then Remove the Carburetor and Check the Throttle Valve. That is the Flap Inside the Carburetor that Opens and Closes when the Linkage is Moved. You can View a Breakdown/IPL at this Addy http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Select the B. Then Select Briggs and Stratton. Then Select Don't have Part Numbers. Then Select the File #44. The Select the Folder #445700.The Carburetor is on page 5 of 12. If the Governor was the Problem, then you would be Able to Lower the Engine RPM by Moving the Governor Rod or the Linkage on the Carburetor. If the Screws have Come Out of the Throttle Valve, then the Heads need to be Removed and Locate the Screws. They Sometimes go All the Way to the Muffler. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

good Luck
