Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S 6HP - primer bulb leaking gas profusely, stratton family, briggs stratton

Question
Greetings,

Picked up a Murray Select 22", 6HP, model 223158XE.  Excellent cosmetic condition, low use as per my friend who gave it to me - issues cropped up shortly after purchase.  He thought there was some recall, but didn't take advantage of it.

Engine notes:  Briggs & Stratton Family YBSXS.1901VC  274466

Mfg. Date of "02101".  SN#: 7428110122C093

Issue - when I put gas in the tank and use the primer bulb, the gas starts leaking out through the small hole in the center of the bulb (which I assume is normal, and to allow air into the bulb).  I can get the mower started, and it runs and idles up and down.  Holding my finger over the bulb hole allows it to run a bit longer, but it eventually dies.  Gas runs continously out of the bulb until it's gone.

I'm assuming there is some gasket or one-way valve of some sorts involved with the primer bulb that is not functioning properly, and allowing the gas to leak into and out of the bulb.

Mower seems solid otherwise, and when the motor is running it sounds great.  Murray's web site doesn't offer support of any kind for older mowers, and I have no documentation unfortunately.  Given the price (free), I figure it's worth putting a few bucks into it, but would like to determine where this is something I can pick up a quick-fix kit of some type for, or whether I'm better off leaving this to a small engine repair shop.  Assuming the latter, a ballpark figure of what a repair like this would likely cost would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Brent

Answer
Hello Brent:

Briggs Doesn't Offer a Breakdown/IPL for this Engine to View Online Yet. You can Purchase A Manual from this Site Addy http://shop.briggsandstratton.com/BShopProductListingPage.asp?rsvp=0&PARENTID=0&... and Enter the Model Numbers YBSXS and the Type Numbers 1901 and Click Search. The Next Page will have the Manual Listed. The Carburetor Needs to be Removed, Disassembled and Soaked Overnight in Carburetor Cleaner (I use Gunk). Then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air and Install New Kit. Be Sure the Carburetor Kit has the Primer Bulb with it. Some Offer the Bulb Extra. You can Purchase a Carburetor Kit Locally or from this Site Addy http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ or Call them at 1-877-707-2787. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
