Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 28R707 briggs timing, cylinder wall, briggs

Question
I just replaced a broken rod in my BS 28R707 mower engine.  Now it starts but seems to be either out of time or running rich.  Once it starts to get a load on the engine it just dies.
I aligned the crank and cam dot (i think), but just wondered if I should have done somthing else or any suggestions??
Thanks!!!
Jon

Answer
Hello Jon:

If there is a Doubt About the Timing Marks. Don't Hesitate and Check that First. Anytime you Rebuild and Engine Make a Check List and Mark Off Each Item you Know to be Important. That Way you Will Always be Sure. From your Description I would First Check the Timing Marks. 1 Tooth Off Will Cause the Symptoms you Described. Did you Replace the Rings? Did You De-glaze the Cylinder Wall. If Not, then this can Cause the Symptoms you Described; Even if the Old Rings were Re-used. The Rings Were Unseated when Removed from the Engine. The Cylinder Must be De-glazed to Allow the Rings to Reseat. Hope this helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
