Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): briggs and stratton, briggs and stratton, crankcase oil

Question
QUESTION: Long explanation and questions. I emailed Eric before and he was really helpful. Anyhow I have a rider with a 14.5 hp motor in it. It sat for about 1 1/2 to 2 years. I have finally got it running. I had premix chainsaw fuel due to the fact it was the freshest and it was the only fuel available. I have noticed it smokes alot. Now today when I ran it it was just a short trip around the house and to drop the deck to make sure it can cut. I did add oil but was unsure how much it needed to be full so I only added 18oz. Well right when I stopped to park it I got a big puff of white grayish smoke. I then added the full 48oz of oil and drained that gas and added straight fuel. What is the likelyness that I need to tear it down now and install new rings and piston? I am going to charge the battery tomorrow and maybe try it to see what happens. Is there anything else I should look at? Thanks for your help I appreciate having a site like this.
ANSWER:   Hello Charlie:

If you Suspect the Rings May Be Stuck, then Add 1/2 Pint of Marvel Mystery Oil to the Crankcase Oil. Remember to Drain 1/ Pint of Oil Before Adding the Marvel Oil to the Crankcase. Operate the Engine as you Normally would for a Few Times and See if the Smoking Stops. Send me the Model and Type Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck

QUESTION: It is running great now. The number is 287707. It is 14.5 horsepower. It has stopped smokig and I ran it for about 3 to 4 hours yesterday. Now is there anything besides basic maintenance I should be doing to this since it sat so long?

Answer
 Hello Again Charlie:

No Worries. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Addy http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Select the B. Then Select Briggs and Stratton. Then Select Don't have Part Numbers. Then Select File #28. Then Select Folder #287700. As for Maintenance, you Might want to Purchase a Carburetor Kit and Keep it Handy. Usually the Carburetors will Clog with Varnish from the Old Gas that was Left in the Carburetor. I Suggest you Change the Oil Again After 5 Hours of Operation and that is Really All you can Do if you have Serviced the Blades, Belts, Idlers and Filters. Remember to Oil the Air Filter by Soaking the Air Filter in New Engine Oil and then Using a Thick Rag, Wrap the Air Filter with the Rag and then Squeeze the Excess Oil from the Filter. I Use PB Rust Catalyst to Lubricate the Connection Points of ALL the Linkage. Turn the Idlers and Pulleys and Listen for Grinding or Rough Noise from the Bearings. If the Bearings are Noisy, then I would Look into Replacing them ASAP so as Not to Do More Damage if the Noisy Bearing should Come Apart or Seize Up. If you Send me the Model Number Of the Mower, I May be Able to Locate a Breakdown/IPL for you to View Online. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.
