Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): craftsman riding tractor, proper manuals, bypass valve

Question
There is a lever in the back of the tractor that engages the transmission. but the transmission does not engage when the lever is in the engage mode (the main purpose of the lever is to disengage the transmission so that it can be manually pushed). Could it be the clutch, the lever mechanism or do I have an other problem?

Answer
 Hello Larry:

From your Description it Sounds like you have a Hydromatic or Hydrostatic Transaxle. The Lever Opens a Bypass Valve and Allows the Transaxle to Turn by Rerouting the Fluid Around the Motion Control Valve. I am Speaking in General Terms, Please Understand. Send me the Model Numbers Off the Mower, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manuals and Better Assist you. Thanks.

 Respectfully

 John
