Question -
I recently bought a 1994 883 sporster it ran good except for when you would get on it in any gear it would sputter about three time (like it was choking down) and then take off. I was leaking oil from the front rocker box and when i bought it the lady told me that the bike had sat up for a few years so i decited to put a 1200 kit in it. The kit included new pistions, rings, and cans. I installed all of the new parts along with the original heads. The kit did not require any head work. I assimbled the engine and on my first test drive it did the same thing that it was doing before. I installed new plugs and plug wires with the kit and i checked the resistance in the coil. I fiddled with the carb moved the jet needle up and down on the notches and it did not make any difference. I checked the float for holes and the setting of it and they both were ok. I have drag pipes, a 5 inch KN filter and a 1200cc kit do i need to re jet the carb or is the problem somewares else. I also checked the timing and it was good. I will appericate any help because i spent a lot of money on paint and parts and i cant even use my bike. I have called the dealership but they dont seem to ambitious about helping me I am not to proud to ask for help so any info you can give me will be much welcomed.
         Thanks Jason

Your accerator pump in the carb is probably gumed up. I would remove the carb and rebuild it. While you have it off I would add a Dyna-jet kit to the carb. You are probably running lean with the mods you did. the carb kit will richen it up and give you better throttle responce.
Good luck and happy riding

I have cleaned the carb many of times, I do not know how to check the  Diaphram but when I turn the accelerator i get a mistof fuel out of theaccelerator jet. When ever i check the plugs they a are carbon fouled (black powder not liquid). I assumed that ment that the bike is running rich. My bike has a CV carb and a Compression ration of 10:1 so waht jets shoul i change. The only difference in a stock 883 and a stock 1200 is the main jet in a 883 is a 160 and a 1200 is a 170, but i was hesitant about changing it because i thought it was already too running rich. I have moved the jet needle all the way up on the notches and my plugs still get covered in carbon. Thanks for any help or advice you can give it is greatly needed and appericated.

Since your bike is running rich you need to go smaller on the jets, but since you have cleaned the carb and it still doesnt run right then you need to look at other things before rejetting. Put the needle back to stock. Put in a new set of plugs and go for a ride. If the plugs are fouling then test the coil "hot". The coil can break down when it gets hot. Let me know what the readings are for the coil.

I installed anew set of accell platinum u groove cyclite plugs when i put the 1200 kit in, i also installed accell 300+ wires. I tested the coil with an ohm meter if that is what you mean. The primary was 3.1 and the secondary was 10,000. The primary is the high number within the range and the secondary number is the low number in the range. The ranges that i used came from a sportster service manual. Those are the numbers that i used. I hooked atiming light up to my bike to check the timing and when the motor started to accelerate the timing light began to flicker. I will get another timing light tomorrow and check the batery connections and i will let you know the results. Somebody told me to change the slow jet to a 45 from the 40 that is alrady in there. thanks for all of the advice so far i really apericate it.

Do one thing for me, start the bike with the air filter off and rev it up. Does the slide in the carb go up as you rev it up?

Yes it does go up but not instantly it has a slight delay. Is there any way i can check the accelerator diaphram. The needle shoots gas in to the carb. Is there other way to check the coil besides the way i did it? What about the VOES and how do i check that?

Mike
Answer -
It should have a slight delay. The only way to check the accelerator pump is to take it apart, but since it is shooting gas into the carb there is probably no problem. That is what its designed to do.
The test you did on the coil was correct, but the secondary at 10,000 OHMs is borderline. You never told me if you did a hot test on the coil. Since it is borderline I would go ahead and replace it.
Since you are having the same problem before and after the conversion there can only be a couple of diferent things that can cause it. Also you are fouling plugs so that means either a rich condition or a ignition problem. The VOES will not cauce the fouled plugs. All it does is change the timing.
Like I said before, I would add a dyna-jet kit to the bike. This would solve any rich or lean problem.
Hope this helps
Mike

The book i have does not tell me how to check the coil hot? Do you mean run the bike for a while and the test it or do you mean thest it while it is running? Please explain to me how to test the coil hot.
         Thanks Jason
Answer -
Sorry, clicked the wrong button before!
You can do it two ways. Ride the bike for around 5 miles and get the coil hot. Remove it and test it. You have to do it quick. The other way is to remove it and put it in a oven at 200 degrees for around 20 minutes and test it.
Mike

I just realized that the number of the jets are staped on top of the jet. I removed my piolet jet and saw that it is a #45. I will go to the HD shop in the morning and get a stock #40. I guess who ever had the bike befor me rejetted it the carb for the pipes. I will let you know how the coil test come out. Since i raised the compression to 10:1 it shouldn't take as much gas the explode in the cylinder? Thatnk for you advice and paitents.
         Jason
Answer -
The compression doesnt have anything to do with the amount of gas that is needed. It just compresses it more and give you more horsepower. make sure you run high test with that high of a compression or you will get pinging.

I put my coil in the oven and baked ait at 200 degrees for 20 min and testeds it the number went up to 11,200. I bought a new jet and realized when itried to put it in that it doesnt fit. So i brought the carb to the HD shop and said thet all of the internal componets are different. So i have to get all new parts. i am thinking about buying a whole new carb. The s&s seper e What is your opinion on this purchase or should i just buy all new parts? If so where do i get the best quality parts at.
   thanks Jason
Answer -
If it were me I would go with the S&S super E carb. It flows more air than the stock carb and will increase performance. they come with easy to follow installation instructions, so you should be able to install it yourself.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike

There are two carbs in the JP magazine the Super E and Mikuni HSR42 which one would be better to buy. The Mikuni is alittle more expensive so it that much better or is it to much for my buke? Which one is easier to tune and work with? Please give me your expert opinion on the both of them.
Thanks for all your help and paitents.  Jason

Answer
Personnel opinion. I would go with the S&S. I have used them for years. They are easy to tune as long as you follow the directions. They are a little less expensive. Carbs are rated on how much air they flow, not gas. The S&S has a higher rating than the HSR2.
Looking back over the orgional question I see you have drag pipes. You might want to change them as well. Drag pipes make alot of noise, but do nothing for power. Infact, the drag pipes will hurt your performance in the midrange where most people ride. Drag pipes are make for high RPMs, hence the name drag pipes.
