Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman mower transaxle problem?, craftsman model, transaxle

Question
Craftsman model# 917.258914, Hydro Gear Transaxle model# 218-3010, Hydro Gear Pump model# BU-10L-122.

My small son was riding the mower when it just stopped, and now fails to go in gear. When I manually push the mower (with the engine off) I hear a grinding/whinning noise from the rear end. I see no visible leaks or obvious problems when examining the rear end.
Upon looking at the prices for a complete replacement of the transaxle or pump, wow - I could buy a new mower. But, I'd really like to fix this one as it belonged to my late father. The mower was maintained by Sears and is in great shape otherwise.
Any thoughts on diagnosing the problem, or suggestions about how to proceed? I've tried finding another similar mower with the thought of replacing the rear end - no luck yet.
The transaxle appears to be a sealed unit (I know I don't need to add fluid) - should I just "open 'er up" and look for something broken?
If I could just isolate the problem to the pump, transaxle, something else that would be great.
Thanks in advance for any help...
Larry

Answer
 Hello Larry:

I Don't Suggest a Home Owner Try to Repair a Hydro Transaxle/Transmission or Pump. There are Special Gauges and Tools Required for the Repairs. Is the Linkage Still Moving the Transaxle Controls Under the Mower? If the Linkage is Good and Still Working the Transaxle Control, then It Sounds like the Pump Relief has Stuck Open and there is No Fluid Pressure to Operate the Transaxle. Have you Priced a Hydro from this Site; http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ or Call them at 1-800-707-2787. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck
