Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): riding mower starting problems, starter solenoid, positive cable

Question
troybuilt bronco model# 13AJ6096766 SERIAL# 1L023H10575 2004
I have a question about my 2004 troybuilt bronco riding mower model#13aj6096766, serial # 1l023h10575, 18.5 hp. My father used it on a Monday and said it worked fine for him,but when I went out on Tuesday to use it , when I tried to start it the starter was very slow, dragging and would not start,I figured the battery was weak or dead so I boosted it to start it.But when I turned the key to start it it still was very weak and would not start, and I smelled something hot,so I disconnected the boosting cables and the mower’s battery was sizziling, you could here the sound coming from the batterys vent. I figured the battery was bad and had it tested at a local parts store they said it was fried,I purchased a new one, while installing it as i connected the positive cable to the positive terminal it arcked over a spark,I took this as there was a serious ground somewhere, so I pulled the battery & tray and checked my wires under there, and sure enough the red wire from the battery had arched over with the red wire from the starter solenoid, so I separated the wires and cleaned them and re taped them, also found the main ground wire was melted, so I replaced it.the starter solenoid was also melted on one side, so I bought a new one. After doing all this I tried starting the tractor but it will not engage the starter when I turn the key, it doesn’t do anything, I have checked every wire, they all look fine. There was a 20amp fuse behind the dash next to the key switch but it was not blown? Could’nt find anymore fuses. I can take a screwdriver and cross the starter solenoid over and the starter will engage but acts like it can’t turn the motor really slow and dragging, but I can’t get the starter to engage with the key switch?I am at witts end and can’t figure it out.Any help you can provide will be a blessing!

Answer
 Hello Shawn:

Check the Safety Switches. When you Jumper the Ignition Switch you are Bypassing the Safety Switches. This is Why the Ignition Switch Will Not Send Current to the Solenoid. As for the Starter. Remove the Starter and Check it for Binding and Dragging. If the Starter is Good, then Remove the Belts from the Engine Crankshaft Pulley. Does the Engine Turn Correctly Now? If No, then Remove the Spark Plug/Plugs and Turn the Engine. Does it Turn Easier? If Yes, then Check the Valve Clearance. Set the Engine to TDC and Set the Intake to .003in - .005in and the Exhaust to .008in - .010in. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully

 John
