Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): lawn tractor charging system, riding mower, charging system

Question
Greetings Marc,

I was given and have fixed, running well, a riding mower with an 18 hp B/S motor about 10 years old.  After I shut it off I can not start it for about 20 minutes, after which it starts fine.  It just does not seem to have the cranking power to get the motor moving fast enough to start.  The battery may be weak, not sure how old it is, but it seems to be charging and hold a charge as I have never had to charge the battery even after the winter.

What would you recommend I check?  thanks

Answer
It sounds as if the starter may be weak when it gets heat-soaked.  If it starts with no boosting or charging after it cools off (20 min.), that is what I suspect.  You should first charge the battery fully and take it in to a parts store and have it load tested.  This will tell you the condition of the battery.  If the battery is OK, you will likely need to replace the starter.  Hope this helps.
