Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): starter turning in reverse, garden tractor, flywheel

I have a garden tractor and had to replace the starter ...when i turn the key nothing happins except the solienoid clicks. if i jump out the starter (by jumping the solienoid) i notice it runs opposite what it should to make the small gear go up to engage the flywheel...any ideas? new battery and solienoid too

Is the battery connected correctly?  The positive side of the battery should be connected to the cable that runs to the solenoid.

Have you had the new battery tested?  Last year we had 2 batteries that reversed polarity.  This is rare but worth checking.
