Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): push lawn mower will not start/spark, briggs stration, self propelled lawn mower

We have Weedeater self propelled lawn mower (model HD81485D)with 6HP Briggs&Stration engine that will not start/spark.  We replaced the spark plug and it popped right off (once) and now will not start nor is it sparking like it wants to start.  What's up?  Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

 Hello Sherry:

 Is the Plug Firing? Remove the Plug and Wrap a Wire Around the Threaded Area of the Plug. Now Attach the Other End of the Wire to the Engine and Turn the Engine. Does the Plug Spark? If Yes then, Remove the Air Filter and Spray a Small Amount of Starter Fluid into the Carburetor Throat. Does the Engine Start and Quit? If Yes, then The Carburetor needs to be Cleaned.
