Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman mower will not go forwards or backwards., throttle linkage, clutch pedal

Question
I have had multiple problems with this mower. I have been the only owner and I bought it new in 1995 not sure where the manuals are. I have a Craftsman 42" 15.5hp OHV Model Number 917.256891 Hydro Transmission 140607 6248T1584. The problem is I was cutting the grass Sunday and when I got to the end of the yard to turn around I push the brake/clutch pedal in to put it in reverse and nothing so I push the pedal in to go forward and nothing. The brake/clutch pedal feels a little easier to push in now that this is happening. I do not hear any noises from the Transmission. No grinding or anything. I had plenty of time to hear something as I was pushing it back to the garage. I checked under the mower to make sure nothing came loose. Can you clue me in on what could be the problem. Also on a side problem when I go to cut the mower off I normally throttle it all the way down before cutting it off but late few times it sounds like it is in full throttle when I have it at the bottom.

Thanks
Scott

Answer
 Hello Scott:

You say the Pedal is Easier to Press? If so, have you Check the Idlers and Pulleys and the Belt? You can View a Breakdown/IPL at this Addy http://www3.sears.com/ and Select the Lawn Equipment Box. Then Enter the Model Numbers 917.256891 and Click Continue. Verify the Equipment and Click Continue. From this page you can View a Breakdown/IPL (Diagram) or an IPL(Illustrated Parts List). Select the Drive File and View the Diagram. Check the Spring(#55). As to the Engine Problem; Is the Throttle Moving on the Carburetor when you Move the Throttle Lever? Are there Any Broken Springs in the Throttle Linkage? You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine at this Addy http://shop.briggsandstratton.com/BShopProductListingPage.asp?rsvp=0&PARENTID=0&... and Enter the Model Numbers 28N707 and the Type Numbers 0173 and Click Search. Now Select View PDF. This will Download the Breakdown/IPL for you to View Online. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully
