Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Lawn Tractor (mower), john deere lx172 lawn tractor, john deere lx172

Question
I have a John Deere LX172 lawn tractor. The engine starts up with out any problems. After about 10 min it cuts off and I can't start it again. I have to wait about 3 hours. I tried a lot of different things including a full tune-up including all filters and replaced the ignition coil. Starting fluid does not work. Can it be the fuel pump, carburetor or something electrical? Is there any way I can bypass the electrical system. Any ideas what could be causing this problem?

Answer
 Hello Mitch:

You can View a Breakdown/IPL at this Addy http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers LX172. Then Select the Model in the Results Area. Then Select the Sectional Index. Then Select the Section of the Mower or the Engine you Wish to View. If you Replaced the Coil/Ignition Module, then Check the Gas Cap and Ensure it is Venting the Tank Properly. It takes 10 to 15 minutes for a Vacuum to Form in the Tank and Stop th Gas Flow to the Carburetor. Check the Fuel Shut Off Solenoid in the Carburetor Bowl. If the Solenoid is Heating Up and Closing, then it Stops the Gas Flow to the Carburetor. It Usually Takes 10 to 15 Minutes for this to Occur Also. When the Engine Shut Off, Will it Restart with Starter Fluid? If No, then Check the Plug for Fire. If the Plug is Firing, then Check the Compression while the Engine is Hot. If the Plug is Not Firing, then Disconnect the Shut Off Wire from the Coil/Ignition Module and See if the Engine Works Properly. If Disconnecting the Shut Off Wire Corrects the Problem, then a Safety Switch is Causing the Problem. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck
