Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): briggs stratton starter motor, briggs stratton, reverse polarity

help!! I repaired a starter motor off a briggs 8 hp vertical shaft engine. bench tested it /seemed all right.
after installing it i discovered it turns the wrong way(clockwise-pulls drive down)???!!!!!
what did i do  wrong?

Are the battery cables correct?  Is it possible that you installed the rotor upside down?  If you have the starter on the bench, no other parts connected to it, can you connect the negative battery terminal to the starter post and the positive lead to the case?  Does the starter turn in the correct direction when connected with reverse polarity?
