Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Carburetor Problem, briggs stratton, hp briggs

Question
I have a 5 hp Briggs & Stratton snow blower and when you pull the cord to start it gas comes out of the bottom of the carb. Do I need to replace the carb or just find a rebuild kit. I think both will be hard to come by.
Briggs & Stratton 4 cycle
Model 80302
type 0357-01
code 6507013
Thanks

Answer
The carb kit part number is 291691.  You may have a bad float as well.  If gas is coming out from the high speed jet on the bottom side of the carb it may be loose or the gasket may be bad.  A new gasket comes in the kit.

Be careful tightening the high speed nut.  The adjustment needle is tapered and if you screw the jet in too tight you can strip the threads or damage the taper on the needle of the hole in the jet.

If you install a kit and still have fuel leaking from the jet then the jet inside the carb is leaking.  If you inspect the jet you will notice a taper just below the threads on the jet.  You can grind off the threads of the old jet and use it as a tool to correct the leak.  With the brass jet threads ground off the old jet, use some very fine lapping compound on the taper of the jet to fix the problem.  With the lapping compound on the old jet, insert it into the carb and then gently lap the area.  Once done, clean the carb with carb cleaner and blow out all the orfices with compessed air from an air compressor.

This sounds complicated and is difficult to describe but it is actually very easy.

Start by getting a carb kit and maybe a new float.  Clean the carb and install the new parts.
Let me know if this helps.
